RNA Cloakroom Project

Another fantastic year at the Ekka

The 2008 Ekka saw the Fellowship have another successful and rewarding year running the RNA’s cloakroom.  The project took on a very different face this year as long time co-ordinator Judy Leary was unable to be involved at the same level she has been for many years.  Instead the Project Team enthusiastically put their hands to the project for the first time.

This year’s cloakroom was again an enjoyable experience and we were fortunate enough to have up to 75 members volunteering their time. Help also came from some great friends, carers and also some fabulous staff from Suncorp.  The show’s crowd numbers had recovered from last year and there were a couple of extremely busy days where volunteers worked hard and long to provide a service to our valuable customers.

We handled thousands of back packs, show bags, strollers and babysat quite a few stuffed animals over the ten days and raised good funds for the Fellowship.  We sold hundreds of striped bags for storage and the customers were grateful to pack everything into one bag and benefit from the discounts offered.

The project not only raises needed funds for the Fellowship but provides an opportunity for our members to volunteer and engage with the public in a real working role.  It has been a beneficial experience for the confidence and wellness of each and everyone involved.  Many friendships were formed and hopefully contact will be maintained and support will grow.

A big thanks needs to be given to Judy Leary for helping the project team learn the ropes, Operations Manager Sharon Chaffey for ensuring a smooth daily routine and to each and every marvellous person who gave their time and energy to participate in the project. We are already looking forward to next year and hope to have just as much fun all over again!

President's Piece October 2008

My attention was recently drawn to an article in one of the free local newspapers. It was about Bligh Voller Nield, the leading Brisbane firm of architects who are providing ongoing professional services for the planned renovation of Fellowship House.

BVN, as they are known, are a very well respected name in the architectural and building industry and have a variety of large and significant projects to their credit. They are so successful in what they do that BVN has been selected from a strong field of international contenders to design and construct accommodation and related facilities for the 2012 London Olympic Village.
